Gaining Fame allows players to Level Up and unlock new items to Build and Research.
Playfish's list in the official My Empire FAQ is as close as anyone has bothered to write out, but is inaccurate. In particular, Land Expansion on the Home island continues until level 32 now. The highest level achievable is level 50. At which point you can always create a new facebook name and start the game all over again.
